Tips for Navigating Instagram’s New Sizing Requirements

Because Change is the Only Constant

Just when you thought you had your Instagram game figured out—bam!—new sizing guidelines are here to shake things up. If you’ve been crafting pixel-perfect posts, only to find them looking a little…off lately, you’re not alone. Instagram has once again updated its image and video dimensions, and if you want your content to shine (instead of getting awkwardly cropped), it’s time to adjust.

Why the Change?

Instagram is always tweaking its platform to enhance user experience, optimize mobile viewing, and keep up with emerging content trends. With new features like full-screen experiences, carousel improvements, and a focus on video content, these size adjustments are designed to make posts look better across all devices.

Instagram has published a new overview to help creators stay on top of the latest sizing updates, including dimension charts for carousel posts, Stories, and Reels—check out the full details here, or see a quick breakdown below!

The New Sizing Breakdown

Here’s what you need to know:

📸 Feed Posts: 1080 x 1350px is now the recommended go-to for static images. Forget the old square default—vertical is king.
Landscape Photos and Videos: The ideal size for landscape content is 1080 x 566 pixels, providing a wide, panoramic feel. Keep in mind that this format takes up less vertical space in the feed, so it’s often better suited for more expansive or scenic shots.

📹 Reels & Videos: Stick to 1080 x 1920px for that crisp, full-screen look. Anything outside this ratio risks getting cropped.
Keep text and logos away from the top and bottom edges of your story (avoid a 250px buffer on all sides) to prevent them from being cut off when viewed.
For IGTV cover images, use a size of 420 x 654 pixels.

📖 Carousels: Keep them uniform! Mixing different aspect ratios in one post may result in unpredictable cropping.
For the best presentation, Instagram recommends 1080 x 1350 pixels for portrait-style images.

How to Adjust Your Content Strategy

  • Template Everything: Use design tools like Canva or Adobe Express with updated Instagram templates to ensure your images and videos fit seamlessly.

  • Think Vertical First: Since mobile viewing dominates, prioritize portrait-style visuals that fill the screen.

  • Test Before You Post: Upload drafts and preview them before publishing to avoid unpleasant surprises.

  • Enlist the Pros: Not sure where to start? Work with professionals at Firefly Marketing who stay ahead of platform updates to ensure your content is always optimized and looking its best.
