Does Your Website Need to Be ADA Accessible?
We are used to seeing ADA accessibility in the physical world: ramps, accessible entrances, designated parking spaces and other features designed to make buildings easier for everyone to use. But what does accessibility look like online? And, more importantly:
Does this actually apply to my website?
It depends.
One factor to consider is how visible your website may be to an ADA lawsuit. Some firms use automated scanners to identify websites with potential accessibility issues, which means certain businesses may be more likely to land on their radar.
That is exactly why we created a quick tool to help you get a better idea of where your website stands.
What Does Website Accessibility Mean?
An accessible website is designed so that people with disabilities can more easily navigate, understand and interact with its content.
That may include people who have limited vision, are blind, are deaf or hard of hearing, or have difficulty using a mouse or keyboard in the traditional way.
Things like readable color contrast, image descriptions, captions, clear headings and keyboard-friendly navigation can all play a role.
For some organizations, these features are especially important because their websites provide public information, services or resources that need to be available to a broad audience.
Should This Be on Your Radar?
Some organizations should be paying especially close attention to website accessibility, including:
- Healthcare providers
- Government agencies
- Schools and educational organizations
- Other organizations that serve the public
For other businesses, the need may not be as clear-cut.
We Built a Tool to Help
Firefly developed a simple ADA Risk Assessment to help businesses and organizations get a better sense of whether website accessibility should be a priority.
Answer a few quick questions about your organization and website, and the tool provides guidance based on your responses.
It can also be useful if your website has been around for a while and you have not revisited accessibility recently. Your business may have changed. Your website may have changed. Requirements from clients, insurers or other organizations may have changed too.
Not sure where your website stands? Take the Firefly ADA Risk Assessment and find out whether accessibility deserves a closer look.
