Potential Tax Write-Off: ADA Accessibility Widget

Published On: January 26th, 2026||Categories: Marketing||

An ADA Accessibility Widget That Could Also Lower Your Taxes

If you aren’t exactly sure what it means, you’re not alone. It sounds more technical than it actually is.

At its core, this is a tool added to your website that helps visitors customize how they view and interact with your content, making it easier to use for people with disabilities. And yes, this type of tool may qualify for a federal tax credit, which means improving accessibility could also reduce your tax bill.

What Is an ADA Accessibility Widget?

An ADA accessibility widget is typically a small icon or menu on your website that users can click to adjust how the site appears and functions.

Depending on the widget, visitors may be able to:

  • Increase or decrease text size
  • Improve color contrast
  • Pause animations or flashing elements
  • Navigate the site using a keyboard
  • Use screen reader–friendly settings
  • Adjust spacing or readability

These features help people with visual, motor, or cognitive impairments access your website more easily and without requiring them to leave the page or use outside tools. (Psst…we have one on our website – click the little person icon in the bottom left corner to explore the features)

From a business perspective, it’s one of the simplest ways to start improving website accessibility.

The ADA Tax Credit, Explained Simply

There’s a federal incentive called the ADA Tax Credit (officially called the Disabled Access Credit) designed to help small businesses afford accessibility improvements—including website accessibility tools like widgets.

Here’s the simple version:

  • The credit covers 50% of eligible accessibility expenses
  • You can apply it to up to $10,250 in costs
  • The maximum credit available is $5,000 per year
  • The first $250 doesn’t count, which is why the max credit is $5,000

This is a tax credit, not a deduction, so it directly reduces what you owe in taxes.

Does an ADA Accessibility Widget Qualify?

In many cases, yes.

Website accessibility tools and services that improve access for people with disabilities are considered eligible expenses under the ADA tax credit. That includes:

  • ADA accessibility widgets
  • Web accessibility software
  • Accessibility-related consulting or setup services

If you’re already investing in your website, this credit can help offset the cost of doing it the right way.

Do You Qualify?

Most small businesses qualify if they meet one of the following:

  • Your business made $1 million or less in revenue last year
  • You have 30 or fewer full-time employees

So Why Is Firefly Marketing Talking About This?

Because accessibility and marketing are no longer separate conversations.

Your website is one of your most important marketing tools, and if it’s not accessible, you could be limiting your audience, hurting user experience, or increasing legal risk without realizing it.

At Firefly Marketing, we spend a lot of time helping businesses improve their websites, user experience, and online visibility. Web accessibility naturally fits into that work. When we realized many of these improvements can also qualify for a tax credit, it became something worth sharing.

How Do You Actually Claim the Credit?

You don’t claim the credit through Firefly Marketing; it’s handled through your taxes.

The general process:

  1. Add an ADA accessibility widget or similar accessibility solution
  2. Keep documentation of the cost
  3. Have your CPA or tax professional file IRS Form 8826 with your tax return

We always recommend talking with a tax professional before filing, but knowing the credit exists is the first step.
